[Overview]
As a teaching unit directly under Chengdu University of Technology, the College not only undertakes the professional education of art and media, but also launches the art disciplines, functioning as the Base of Public Art Education for college students and an essential implementation unit in the strategy of building a high-level comprehensive university. Over the past two decades since its establishment, relying on the strong support of the CDUT and thriving growth of the national cultural industry and the all-round deepening of reform in higher education, the College sticks to the guiding ideology of "cultivating interdisciplinary applied art media professionals with innovative awareness and creative thinking, and providing high-quality humanities and art education for all college students", follow the development mindset of "communication art integration and innovation, emphasizing on teaching and scientific research, discipline upgrading, and the mix of production and learning so as to serve the society", and take the path of "teaching as the center, faculty as the key, disciplines as the spearhead, scientific research as the essence, people's livelihood as the foundation, publicity as the battle field, funds as the guarantee, achievements as the benchmark, management as the efficiency, and development as the purpose", in an attempt to score achievements in social services and cultural inheritance and innovation. To make contributions to build Sichuan a strong cultural province, the College gives high priority on the cultivation of interdisciplinary and applied art and media talents, overcomes barriers of art and communication, constructs a discipline professional clusters integrating Drama, Film and Television, Design, Journalism and Communication, Music and Dance, so as to realize the full chain training of art and media education, production, and promotion of high-level competent personnel. The move has played a key role in the field of art and media higher education in the central and western regions. There are now 7 undergraduate art majors, including Playwright-director of Film and Television, Performance, Broadcasting and Hosting Art, Music Performance, Drama, Film and Television Literature, Visual Communication Design, and Environment Design, as well as 2 undergraduate Literature majors, including Advertising, and Program for Broadcasting and TV. There are 2 master programs in Communication and Art, with more than 2,800 students in total. Institutions including Public Art Education Center of Chengdu University of Technology, Sichuan Opera Art Research Institute, Art and Media Education Research Center, Science and Education Documentary Research Institute have been established. The College is a national Intangible Cultural Heritage Sichuan Opera Teaching and Exhibition Base and a co-construction unit of the Management Committee in the Creative and Cultural Industries Cluster in the eastern suburbs of Chengdu.
[Historical Development]
Primary Stage (May in 1997-September in 2006)
It cooperated with SRT to build Radio and Film College of Chengdu University of Technology in 1997, opening three Adult specialty programs: Playwright-director of Film and Television, Performance of Film and Television, and Production of Film and Television.
The Specialty of Film and TV Program Host unified enrollment junior college education project was launched in 1998.
A new established undergraduate specialty of Art Design was incorporated in the Department of Management Science in 1999, so as to further integrate majors about Art.
Playwright-director of Film and Television was upgraded to undergraduate specialty in 2001, which has greatly improved the school-running level of Film and Television major. The undergraduate specialty of Advertising and two junior college specialties of Advertising Design and Production and Interior Design, which were set up in Business College, were newly-added in the same year. The landscape of Journalism and Communication, Drama, Film and Television Literature, and Design has been primarily formed; and there are three undergraduate majors, namely, Playwright-director of Film and Television, Art Design, and Advertising, and three junior college majors, namely, Film and TV Program Host, Interior Design and Advertising Design and Production.
Undergraduate majors such as Radio and Television Journalism, Performance and Performance (Broadcasting and Hosting Art Major) were newly added in 2002.
Two new majors, Drama, Film and Television Literature and Music Performance were added in 2006, which has explored the professional education field to music and dance, and further upgraded the professional major distribution of Art majors.
Normative Construction period (September in 2006-September in 2015)
The Master's Degree Program in Communication was approved in 2006 and began to enroll postgraduates the following year, which has improved the school-running level and made new breakthroughs in discipline construction.
The newly-added specialties of Broadcasting and Hosting Art embarked on the track of rapid development in 2011.
The Master's Degree in Communication program participated in the national degree program assessment in 2013, ranking 36th nationwide, which demonstrates a steady improvement in the discipline construction. According to the adjustment plan of national professional objective, the former Art Design was divided into two majors, namely, Visual Communication Design and Environment Design, integrating and optimizing the teaching resources of majors in Design.
In addition, two Art specialties of Advertising Design and Production and Interior Design were relocated from the College of Applied Technology to the management of College of Communication Arts and Sciences in 2014. Up to now, the College has formed a standardized school-running landscape, involving four disciplines and nine majors, namely Journalism and Communication, Drama, Film and Television Literature, Music and Dance, Design, and accomplished the institutional construction of the work in the College.
Characteristic development period (September in 2015-up to now)
In 2015, the College implemented the "Discipline and Major Upgrading and Promotion Plan", launched the application for Master's Degree Programs of "Drama, Film and Television Literature" and "Art" and work to upgrade Communication to the primary discipline of Journalism and Communication. The integration of teaching resources of Drama, Film and Television Literature, and Journalism and Communication has reaped primary results, featuring interdisciplinary integration and relatively independence in school running. The College was granted national Intangible Cultural Heritage Sichuan Opera Teaching and Exhibition Base.
The Art Building was put into use in 2016. The Specialty of Radio and Television has been listed into Sichuan Excellent Journalism and Communication Talents Education and Training Plan. Art and Media Experimental Teaching Center has been listed into the Provincial Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center (cultivation) Program, making a breakthrough in teaching reform. To implement the 13th Five Year Development Plan, the College confirmed the school-running objective of building itself a world-renowned intelligent and creative Art and Media College with features in the central and western regions and beyond.
The Specialty of Radio and Television ranked No. 28 nationwide in 2017. The Specialty of Drama, Film and Television Literature ranked top 24 in China and top 1 in Sichuan Province, making breakthroughs in the connotative development of professional construction.
Master's Degree in Art was successfully approved in 2018, which has primarily shaped a postgraduate training system covering Art and Media.
[Faculty Team]
The College now has a faculty of more than 140 persons, including 30 full-time lecturers with senior titles. Double-quality teachers account for 40% of the total and there are 20 noted guest professors and part-time professors employed inside and outside of the industry. The well-structured faculty team in age, educational background, and prominent academic advantages, has enabled to shape three teaching and research innovation teams, namely, "Film and Television Culture Communication", "Media Culture Communication and Operation", and "Film and Television Literature". One expert has been awarded the special government allowances of the State Council, two have won the title of "Outstanding Experts with Outstanding Contributions in Sichuan Province", and other two have been listed in the "Reserve Candidates for Academic and Technical Leader of Sichuan Province".
The College's experimental and practical teaching environment, hardware conditions, and information management level rank top in China's colleges and universities; and Art and Media Experimental Teaching Center and a school-level television station have been established. The College's Art Building and Experimental Teaching Building in the North Campus cover an area of about 20,000 square meters and nearly 5,000 square meters respectively, with an investment in facilities and equipment totaling nearly RMB 100 million and being noted as a standardized examination room for the joint examination of Sichuan Drama, Film and Television, and Dance Arts. Its "Cloud Platform for Integrated Media Experimental Teaching" is dubbed the second media integrated virtual laboratory in China.
Experimental Teaching Center has been equipped with 36 experimental rooms with over 400 experimental projects. There are over 90 professional classrooms with diversity, including mac studio, film studio, linear editing room, non-linear editing room, language lab, television studio, performance room, physique building room, make-up room, piano room, MID studio, recording studio, skylight studio and 3D printing room, as well as exhibition and creative performance platforms, including comprehensive theater, art gallery, black box experimental theater, high-definition live broadcast hall, digital film projection hall and academic lecture hall. The College is also equipped with cutting-edge high-profile equipment in the media and art industry including RedOne 4K camera, Apple MacPRO quad-core workstation, 12m electric control rocker arm, and UAV, which not only caters to the professional experimental courses, but also manufacture works including manufacturing and production of high-definition digital films, feature films, documentaries and advertising films, as well as cultural activities like large-scale stage performances, art and design exhibitions.
[Teaching and Research]
Over the past five years, the College has made significant achievements in talent training, scientific research and foreign cooperation. The Specialty of Radio and Television has been listed into Sichuan Excellent Journalism and Communication Talent Training Plan, ranking 28th in China, and being rated as a 3-star high-standard major with a big name in regions and beyond. The Specialty of Drama, Film and Television Literature ranked top 24 in China and top 1 in Sichuan Province, which has been rated as 4-Star high-standard major. The teaching reform project "Research on Innovation and Reform of Communication Art Integration Teaching Mode in the Media Integration Era" won the second prize of Sichuan Provincial Teaching Achievement Award. The faculty team has obtained over 100 vertical subjects at all levels, including the National Social Science Fund, the National Arts Fund, and Humanities and Social Sciences Research Projects of the Ministry of Education. The team has published more than 350 papers in domestic and foreign professional journals, and more than 30 monographs and textbooks, manufactured more than 200 film and television works (collections), and guided students to create works and receive more than 400 awards above the provincial level. In addition, the College has played an active role in conducting international cooperation and foreign exchanges, co-building more than 20 off-campus practical training bases with front-line units in the industry including JSBC, Sichuan Academy of Arts, Chengdu Media Group, Cover News, Sichuan People's Art Theatre, Sichuan Museum and Chengdu Huaqi Cloud Technology Co., Ltd. It also cooperated with Missouri School of Journalism, University of Missouri, to cultivate undergraduates in Journalism and Communication, hold the Missouri News Teaching Week and participate in the "Overseas Study Program for Teachers and Students of Art Discipline in Chinese Universities" hosted by CEAIE and Tongji University. Ms. Xi Marie, President of the World Film Institute, Mr. Zhang Yimou, a world-renowned director, Ms. Zhang Ziyi, a world famous actress, Mr. Zhang Ying, "the father of Taiwan, China film", and Mr. Wen Jun, President of Hong Kong Film Awards Judgment Board, were invited to conduct academic exchanges.
[Efficiency in School Management]
The College is committed to the cultivation of intelligent creative talents with media era integration capabilities. Excellent students with professional achievements at the College have won more than 500 awards undergraduate discipline contests and innovation and entrepreneurship competitions at national, provincial and municipal level. The 9 sessions of master's graduates and 19 sessions of undergraduates, totaling over 8,000 high-quality art and media talents with virtue and wisdom, have been trained and transmitted for the country. The employment rate of the College students has remained above 95%, with its scope covering Party and government organizations, enterprises and institutions, news communication institutions and art troupes, including Xinhua News Agency, CNAO, SASAC, CCTV, CNR and television stations, radio stations, newspaper groups and other institutions at local levels. The quality of talent has been widely recognized by the society and sectors.
