College of Foreign Languages & Cultures
Since its initiation in 1956, College of Foreign Languages & Cultures has transformed different development stages, namely Foreign Language Teaching and Research Office, Foreign Language Teaching Department and Foreign Language Department, and was officially established in 2004. The College has been functioned as the leading unit of the Foreign Language Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Land and Resources and one of the 15 member units of National Foreign Language Translation Certificate Examination Committee of the Ministry of Education Examination Center. It is now serving as the Vice President Unit in Sichuan College and University Foreign Language Teaching Research Association, Sichuan Applied Foreign Language Research Association, Sichuan Cognitive Linguistics Research Association and Translators Association of Sichuan, and the Sichuan Foreign Language Training Bases for Civil Servants Going Abroad and Human Resources Development Center of the Ministry of Land and Resources. Since 1978, over 30 foreign language training courses for personnel going abroad in English, Japanese, French, Russian and German have been launched for Central Ministries and Commissions, including the former Ministry of Geology and Mineral Resources, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Metallurgical Industry, Ministry of Land and Resources, and Chinese Academy of Sciences. Foreign Language Undergraduate Program was initiated in 1993, master programs in Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics were established in 2001, and MTI program was also established in 2011.
The College now has a faculty team of 136, including 8 professors, 39 associate professors; and 25 doctors. It also employs more than 30 visiting professors, part-time professors and experts at home and abroad (including 6 foreign professors). The College sets four undergraduate majors, namely, English, Japanese, Translation and Interpretation, and Business English, two master programs in Foreign Language and Literature and MTI, scientific research and social service platforms including "Bashu Culture International Communication Research Center", Key Research Base for Humanities and Social Science in Colleges and Universities in Sichuan Province, Foreign Language Education Research Center in Colleges and Universities of STEM, Collaborative Research Base of CDUT & Sichuan Province English Writing Big data, Literary Geography Research Center, "the Belt and Road" Language Policy and Planning Research Center, Japanese Language and Literature Research Center, Language Service Center and Language Service Center. English is listed as one of the first batch of characteristic majors in Sichuan Province, and Basic Japanese is listed as the first provincial model Japanese course in Sichuan Province. . In addition, Chinese as a Foreign Language has been launched since 2014.
Over these years, the College lecturers have carried out over 30 national social science fund projects, humanities and social science research projects of the Ministry of Education, philosophy and social science projects of Sichuan Province, published over 200 monographs, translated literatures and textbooks, released over 700 papers, won 5 Teaching Achievement Awards granted by the People's Government of Sichuan Province, over 30 provincial and municipal scientific research awards, and completed more than 500 interpretation and translation projects.
The College has established a stereoscopic and diverse foreign language practice training platform. Foreign Language Practice Teaching Demonstration Center are equipped with more than 1200 language laboratories, including simultaneous interpretation laboratories, translation laboratories, audiovisual translation rooms, English corners set by foreign teachers, and recording and broadcasting classrooms. In addition, the College has equipped with foreign language teaching and training software platforms, such as ITEST, TRADOS and SPEEXX. The College Information Center has collected more than 30,000 books, and established over 30 educational practice bases at home and abroad, creating opportunities for cultivating high-quality and foreign language talents with interdisciplinary abilities.
