School of Marxism
The predecessor of the School of Marxism of Chengdu University of Technology is the Political Science and Research Department of Chengdu College of Geology, which was established when the university was founded in 1956, opened the philosophy teacher class of Chengdu College of Geology in 1978, and built the "Two Courses" teaching and the ideological and political theory course teaching department. In October 2010, the university strictly implemented the requirements of the Marxism Theoretical Research and Construction Project of the central government and established the College of Political Science according to the system of the second-level college to manage the teaching of ideological and political theory courses and the construction of Marxist theoretical disciplines. In order to carefully implement the spirit of the Innovation Plan for the Construction System of Ideological and Political Theory Courses in Colleges and Universities (JSK [2015] No. 2) and the Construction Standards for Ideological and Political Theory Courses in Higher Education Institutions (JSK [2015] No. 3), it was officially renamed as the School of Marxism in November 2015 and established as an independent second-level teaching and research institution with a complete system. In November 2021, the School was selected into the second batch of comprehensive reforming pilot schools (departments) of "Three Whole Education" in Sichuan Province.
It has established the first and second departments of undergraduate ideological and political theory teaching and research; the department of postgraduate ideological and political theory teaching and research; the department of ideological and political education; and the experimental and practical training center of ideological and political theory courses. It has jointly established the Sichuan Provincial key research center for Philosophy and Social Sciences: Sichuan Mineral Resources Research Center; the key research base of the Education Department of Sichuan Province: Ecological Civilization Research Center in Western China; and six university-level key research bases, including the "Research Center for the Theoretical System of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics", the "Institute for Clean Government and Social Development", the "Sichuan Center for Clean Education and Research" and the "Community Research Center".
In 2006, the School acquired two master's degree authorization points of secondary disciplines, namely, Basic Principles of Marxism and Ideological and Political Education. In 2011, it acquired a master's degree authorization point of primary discipline of Marxist Theory, with five secondary disciplines, including basic principles of Marxism, research on adapting Marxism to the Chinese context, ideological and political education, research on basic issues of modern Chinese history and the Party building. The undergraduate major in ideological and political education was opened in 2010 and was selected as a provincial first-class undergraduate major in 2020. Based on the needs of economic and social development in Sichuan and the western region, it places emphasis on training compound and applied talents. With "thick foundation, wide caliber, high quality and strong ability" as the guiding principles and basic requirements, we aim to set up the talent training concept of "four orientations" that take "politics as the soul, quality as the base, ability as the priority and knowledge as the base", construct a talent cultivation system of "four aspects in one" with undergraduate supervisor system as the main body, "three understandings" (understanding principles, truth, and things), "three classes" (theoretical class, ideological and political class, and field class), "three skills" (doing, writing, and speaking), and "three abilities" (reading, thinking, and using) as the "four aspects", and establish a "two dimensions in one" teaching model that consists of "small class teaching", "in-school experiment and practice training", and "off-school practice teaching".
The School owns a well-structured faculty with professional titles, education background, strong quality and ability in different age groups. There are now 131 full-time and part-time lecturers in total, including 15 professors (1 doctoral supervisor), 42 associate professors and 43 lecturers with Doctoral Degrees (another 5 doctoral students); also 1 lecturer with Nationwide Prominent Teacher title, 1 expert with special government allowances of the State Council, 2 Academic and Technical Leader of Sichuan Province, 1 distinguished candidate teacher of "Tianfu Ten Thousand Talents Program" Young Top Talent (Tianfu Social Science Elite), 1 National College Ideological and Political Theory Class Nomination Award in 2014, 1 winner of National College and University Outstanding Young and Middle-aged Ideological and Political Theory Course Teacher Merit Funding Program, and 8 candidates for Academic and Technical Leader of Sichuan Province, 2 Experts with Outstanding Contributions in Sichuan Province, 2 Outstanding Experts in Sichuan Province, 1 Prominent Teacher in Sichuan Province, and 5 Advanced Educators in Ideological and Political Education in Sichuan Province.
The School owns 2 Provincial Excellent Teaching Teams, 2 School-level Excellent Teaching Teams, 3 Provincial First-Class Undergraduate Courses, 2 Provincial Ideological and Political Demonstration Courses, 3 Provincial Sharing of Top-quality Courses, 3 Provincial Online Sharing of Top-quality Courses, 1 School-level Sharing of Top-quality Course, 1 School-level Online Sharing of Top-quality Course, and 1 School-level Laboratory. The faculty team is of high quality, since more than 20 person/time won awards at or above the provincial level in teaching competitions including the National College Ideological and Political Theory Course Teaching Demonstration and Excellent Course Observation, Sichuan Province College Young Teacher Teaching Competition, Sichuan College Teacher Teaching Innovation Competition, and Sichuan Province Ideological and Political Theory Course "Excellent Lesson" teaching competitions. Reform of ideological and political courses teaching has exerted great influence in Sichuan and beyond, winning one second prize of National Teaching Achievement and four items of first prize of Provincial Teaching Achievement.
The School is of great scientific research strength in fields like the basic principles of Marxism, research on adapting Marxism to the Chinese context, Ideological and Political Education, and research on basic issues of modern Chinese history. Innovation and application of Marxist world history theory, research on capitalist crisis and Marxist critical theory, Marxist virtual capital theory and virtual economy; core content and practical requirements of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, the construction of socialist ecological civilization with Chinese characteristics, and combining the basic principles of Marxism with the excellent traditional Chinese culture; core socialist values, reform and innovation of practical teaching of Ideological and Political Theory Course, and community ideological and political education; connotation and development of Marx's view of history, modern and contemporary historical personage in Sichuan, and study of revolutionary culture; Characteristics have been formed in the construction of honest administration of Party working style in colleges and universities, as well as a clean culture. During these years, over 300 items of scientific research projects at all levels have been conducted by full-time and part-time lecturers, including 24 items of National Social Science Fund projects, 66 items of provincial and ministerial scientific research projects, and scientific research funds of more than RMB 13 million. 18 Provincial and ministerial scientific research achievement awards have been obtained. More than 100 papers in CSSCI journals such as Marxist Research, Marxism and Reality have been released; More than 40 monographs on Marxist theory have been published.
In the future, the School will stick to the distinctive guidance of "School of Marxism focuses on Marxism research", emphasize teaching of ideological and political education, improve the quality of ideological and political education, talent cultivation level and characteristics of specialty construction, so as to scale up scientific research, expand the impact of social services, build creative brands through cultural inheritance and innovation, promote the connotation development of the School, and strive to build School of Marxism into an ideological and political theory education and teaching base with prominent regional features, engine to drive regional socio-economic growth and significant influence in Sichuan and beyond. To this end, the School is to become an important demonstration base for Marxist theory, and a cultivation base for high-quality Marxist theoretical talents in Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle. This move also makes contributions for the cultivation of builders and successors of the socialist cause with all-round abilities in the areas such as morality, intelligence, physique, beauty and labor.
