College   of Geophysics

Established in 2010, the College of Geophysics of Chengdu University of Technology can trace its long educational history back to 1958 at the creation of the former teaching and research section of geophysics (later renamed the Department of Geophysical Exploration) of Chengdu College of Geology, which was one of the early departments offering geophysical specialties in China and once used names such as the Department of Physical Exploration, the Department of Information and Physics (1993-1999), and the College of Information Engineering (2000-2010) etc.

After more than six decades of development, the College has become an research and teaching institution boasting first-rate scientific research platforms, and first-class disciplines and specialties. Its faculty is composed of 86 members including 68 full-time teachers with a doctoral degree. Among them, 21 are professors, 27 are associate professors, and more than half of the master's and doctoral supervisors have over one year of international exchange experience. There are more than 1,000 undergraduates and more than 400 postgraduates and doctoral students enrolled in the College.

The College consists of 3 teaching departments which are the Department of Geophysics, the Department of Geo-exploration and Information Technology, and the Department of Space Science and Technology, and 1 General laboratory. There is the Key Laboratory of Earth Exploration and Information Techniques (Chengdu University of Technology), Ministry of Education, giving main support to the State Key Laboratory of Oil and Gas Reservoir Geology and Exploration and the State Key Laboratory of Geohazard Prevention and Geoenvironment Protection.

The College is qualified to confer bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. The 3 bachelor's degree majors include Geophysics (a state first-class undergraduate major and state characteristic major), Prospecting Technology and Engineering (a state characteristic major, a major of the Excellent Engineers Education and Training Program of the Ministry of Education, and a first-class undergraduate major of Sichuan Province), and Space Science and Technology. The 2 master's and doctoral degrees disciplines are Geophysics (science, a primary discipline), and Geo-exploration and Information Technology (engineering, a secondary discipline). Also, it operates a postdoctoral research station in Geophysics and a joint postdoctoral research station in Geological Resources and Geological Engineering. Geophysics and Geo-exploration and Information Technology are two important supporting elements to the University's building of first-class disciplines.

Having attached high importance to the creation of academic atmosphere and cultivation of academic innovation ability, the College has carried out multi-level platforms for academic exchange including Lectures on Geophysics, Forum of the College of Geophysics, Postgraduates Academic Seminars, and a series of undergraduate academic activities, providing teachers and students with wide access to academic exchange and innovative development. Over the past years, supported by the University's first-class disciplines project, the College has intensified its efforts to promote excellent postgraduates to further study abroad and participate in international conventions. Meanwhile, the College's students could enroll in the "2+2" training program to earn bachelor's degrees issued by international universities such as the University of Edinburgh in the UK and University of Houston in the US.

With solid strength and abundant resources in scientific research and teaching, the College has undertaken more than 100 programs including the 973 Program, the 863 Program, the major, key, and general programs of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), as well as the national science and technology supporting programs, receiving honors like 3 first prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 first prize of the Scientific Research Achievements Award of the Ministry of Education, and more than 50 provincial and ministerial awards for scientific and technological achievements, with more than 500 scientific and technological papers and more than 50 monographs and textbooks published. Besides, it has been approved to conduct more than 30 provincial and University-level teaching reform and quality engineering projects, and honored with more than 20 provincial and University-level teaching achievement awards, with over 10 on-campus and off-campus internship and practice bases built up, including 1 state center for engineering practice and education.

With more emphasis laid on turning scientific research results into quality teaching resources, the College has established innovation groups through approved research projects, set up scholarships, and held contests that support students in innovative development and raise their capability and competence. Its graduates enjoy stable access to employment and are mainly employed in the industries of oil and gas exploration, mineral prospecting, engineering investigation and survey, seismic monitoring, environmental protection, national defense construction and information technology(IT). And over 35% of its students chose to pursue further study at home or abroad after graduation. Since establishment, the College has cultivated more than 10,000 bachelor's, master's, and doctoral graduates with alumni in all sectors and industries across China and all over the world.
