College of Energy
The College of Energy (formerly the Department of Petroleum) was set up in 1956 at the creation of Chengdu University of Technology (formerly Chengdu College of Geological Exploration) and succeeded in having the first state key disciplines in the field of Oil and Gas Geology in 1989, providing main support to the State Key Laboratory of Oil and Gas Reservoir Geology and Exploration. The College consists of the Department of Oil & Gas Geology, the Department of Oil & Gas Engineering, the Department of New Energy Engineering, Oil Exploitation Geology Laboratory, and Oil & Gas Geology and Engineering Experiment Center.
The College offers four undergraduate specialties, including Resources Exploration Engineering (Oil & Gas Geology), Petroleum Engineering, New Energy Science and Engineering, and Oil & Gas Storage and Transportation Engineering. Resources Exploration Engineering is a state first-class undergraduate specialty, a state-level characteristic specialty, a pilot specialty supported by the state Excellent Engineers Education and Training Program, and passed the international engineering education accreditation. Petroleum Engineering is a provincial characteristic and first-class specialty, and a pilot specialty supported by the provincial Excellent Engineers Education and Training Program. New Energy Science and Technology is a specialty espousing the country's new strategic industries. It has 11 teaching teams, including one provincial distinguished one, and 15 off-campus teaching & research practice bases.
The College offers doctor's and master's degrees in 2 primary disciplines, namely, "Geological Resources and Geological Engineering" and "Oil and Gas Engineering". The doctoral program covers six research areas: "mineral prospecting and exploration", "oil and gas geology", "unconventional oil and gas geology", "oil and gas field exploitation geology", "oil and gas well engineering", and "oil and gas field exploitation engineering". The master's program unfolds in eight research fields: "mineral prospecting and exploration", "unconventional oil and gas geology", "oil and gas geology", "oil and gas field exploitation geology", "oil and gas field exploitation engineering", "oil and gas well engineering" plus "geological engineering" (petroleum geology, geothermal geology) and "new energy and oil and gas engineering" (oil and gas field exploitation engineering, oil and gas well engineering, new energy engineering) for professional master's degree program. The College has one post-doctoral study center (Geological Resources and Geological Engineering) offering the state key discipline "Mineral Prospecting and Exploration" and the provincial key discipline "Oil and Gas Exploitation Engineering".
With more than 60 years of development, the College has developed six pillars and features which are showcased in the combination between six pairs: geology and geophysics, basic geology and oil and gas, geology and geochemistry, petroleum geology and petroleum engineering, oil and gas reservoir genesis and reservoir stimulation, and petroleum geology and exploitation geology. In addition to numerous international collaborative research programs with Saudi Arabia, Iran, Oman and Kazakhstan, it has undertaken research programs such as national key scientific and technological programs from the 6th Five-Year Plan period to the 13th Five-Year Plan period, National Natural Science Foundation of China programs, 863 Program, national geological survey programs, more than 300 provincial and ministerial key research programs and local collaborative programs. With charge of those programs and as their main contributor, it has been honored with the first prize and the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award for 3 times, as well as more than 100 provincial and ministerial awards. Over the past five years, it has published more than 1,000 scientific and technological papers and more than 50 monographs and textbooks, and obtained more than 80 national invention patents.
The College has set up the post of Distinguished Professor of Cheung Kong Scholars Program and was honored by the Ministry of Education with the title "prominent organization in the national education system". Its faculty consists of 121 members (including 109 full-time ones), including 39 professors (of whom 22 are doctoral supervisors) and 33 associate professors. More than 90% of its lecturers have a doctoral degree and over 50% have more than one year of overseas academic experience. The faculty also has State Council Special Government Allowances experts, Outstanding mid-aged experts, and experts admitted to the state "Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Talents Project", winners of the National Excellent Science and Technology Professional Award, recipients of Huo Yingdong Education Award, the Cross-Century talents of the Ministry of Land and Resources, Outstanding experts of Sichuan Province, academic and technological leaders and reserve candidates of Sichuan Province, etc. for 51 person-times in total.
