College of Earth Sciences

As one of the core colleges and schools of Chengdu University of Technology, the College of Earth Sciences, with the longest history of all, can trace its glorious history back to 1929 when the former Department of Geology of Chongqing University was established. In 1956, based on the Department of Geology of Chongqing University, the Department of Geological Survey and Mineral Search of Chengdu College of Geological Exploration was established, incorporating part of the faculties and students from Beijing College of Geology, Changchun College of Geology, the Department of Geology of Northwest University, and the Department of Geology of Nanjing University, hence one of the University's cores departments with the longest history of all. At its creation, the academic leaders included the late famous geologist Li Tangmi, Li Chengsan, Chang Longqing, Liu Zuyi, Wu Yansheng, Li Zhichang, Zhou Xiaohe, Ding Yi, Hu Chongyao, Zhang Yansen, Bian Zhaoxiang, et al. In 1983, the Department of Geology and the Department of Geology and Mineral Resources (renamed Department of Resources and Economics in December 1993) were established. In 2002, the College   of Earth Sciences was established. Through more than 80 years of development, the College has become a relatively capable base for teaching and research with the most complete disciplinary categories of earth sciences.

With a great number of high-caliber experts and scholars, the College has an abundance of teacher resources. It has a faculty of 135 members, including 27 professors, 28 associate professors, 9 doctoral supervisors, 1 provincial Distinguished Teacher, 5 academic and technological leaders of Sichuan Province, 3 recipients of State Council Special Government Allowances, and 2 Outstanding experts of Sichuan province. It also hired 4 emeritus professors ( they are Liu Baojun and Zhang Guowei, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Chen Yuchuan and Duo Ji, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering). In the recent years, it has seen breakthroughs in its teaching and research level with 18 textbooks published. Among them, 4 are selected for the National Planning Textbooks in the 11th Five-Year Plan of General Higher Education, and 1 is selected for the National Planning Textbooks in the 12th Five-Year Plan of General Higher Education. The College has also won 9 state, ministerial and provincial prizes for scientific and technological outcomes including Special Class of National Science and Technology Progress Award, the Science and Technology Award of the Ministry of Land and Resources, and the Science and Technology Progress Award of Sichuan Province, and earned the title "Advanced Unit for Qinghai-Tibet Plateau Geological Theory Innovation and Major Breakthroughs in Mineral Search issued by the Minister Land and Resources".

It offers 6 undergraduate programs, including 3 state characteristic disciplines (Geology, Resources Exploration Engineering, Geochemistry), 1 state Excellent Engineers Education and Training Program discipline, 2 provincial characteristic disciplines, and 1 provincial Excellent Engineers Education and Training Program discipline. It is qualified to confer Doctor's degrees in 2 primary disciplines and 6 secondary disciplines, Master's degrees of 3 primary disciplines and 10 secondary disciplines, and professional master’s degrees in 2 specialties. It features 1 state key discipline, 1 state key (cultivation) discipline and 3 provincial key disciplines. In addition, it owns 1 state demonstration center for experimental teaching, 1 provincial demonstration center for experimental teaching, 1 state field practice and teaching base, 2 provincial undergraduate talent training bases, 2 key laboratories of the Ministry of Land and Resources, 1 provincial teaching team, 2 provincial scientific research and innovation teams, and delivers 4 provincial exquisite courses.

The College has forged its own advantages and features in the research fields of regional geological survey, solid mineral exploration, exploration geochemistry, remote sensing geology, 3S technology and application, cartography, new mineral and rock materials, reusing of mining and industrial waste, evaluation and protection of geological environment, and agricultural geology etc. It also boasts solid strength in scientific research and enjoys high reputation at home and abroad in the fields of structural geology and tectonics, mineral prospecting and exploration, mineral deposits, mineralogy, petrology, and spatial information technology etc. Moreover, it has established extensive academic exchanges and cooperation ties with countries and regions such as the United  States , France , Germany , the UK , Japan , Russia , Canada , Switzerland , Austria , and Kazakhstan .

Looking ahead to create a even brighter future, the College of Earth Sciences will recruit more talents and foster a team of high-level and high-caliber teachers to foster more elites in technology and management for the country and society.
