Renowned Mathematician Professor Zhang Yitang Visited CDUT to Conduct an Academic Lecture

On the 1st of July, 2024, the prestigious “Mount Everest Forum” welcomed the eminent Chinese-American mathematician, Professor Zhang Yitang from the University of California, Santa Barbara, to present an academic lecture on My Reflections on Mathematics. The event took place in the esteemed Geohazards International Academic Lecture Hall, chaired by Professor Hu Bing, Deputy Secretary of the CPC CDUT Committee. The lecture drew a full house, with attendees including faculty and students from various departments such as the School of Mathematics and Physics, Business School, and School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, as well as members of the Mount Everest Scientific Research Project.

Professor Liu Qingyou, Secretary of the CPC CDUT Committee, commenced the session by expressing heartfelt thanks for Professor Zhang’s esteemed presence and lauding the enriching insights he was set to share with the students and faculty of CDUT. Furthermore, Professor Liu extended an invitation to Professor Zhang, earnestly hoping for his regular visits to provide experience and support in CDUT’s educational and research endeavors.

Professor Zhang commenced his discourse by recounting his pioneering work on the Twin Prime Conjecture, offering a glimpse into his mathematical journey, from his initial inspiration to the rigorous path of academia and the subsequent professional trials. Throughout, he emphasized the role of sustained curiosity and contemplation in sparking inspiration, encapsulated by the adage, “Opportunities favor the prepared mind.” He urged the audience to embrace perseverance, a nonchalant attitude toward accolades, and a steadfast commitment to their foundational aspirations when confronted with life’s adversities.

The lecture concluded with an animated Q&A session, where Professor Zhang addressed the inquisitive queries of the attendees with erudition and grace. Renowned for his seminal contributions to number theory, particularly his groundbreaking work on the Twin Prime Conjecture, Professor Zhang captivated the audience with his intellectual prowess and charismatic personality. The lecture was punctuated by rounds of applause and an atmosphere charged with enthusiasm. The captivated audience sought to immortalize the moment with group photographs and autographs, a testament to the profound impact of Professor Zhang’s visit.
