On July 20, 2024, the inaugural meeting of the Second Geological Exploration Committee of the Sichuan Petroleum Institute, along with the conference on "Deep Oil and Gas Exploration in the Sichuan Basin," was successfully convened in Chengdu. Organized by the Geological Exploration Committee of the Sichuan Petroleum Institute and co-hosted by CDUT and Sinopec Exploration Company, the event gathered 67 participants representing 20 enterprises, universities, and research institutes involved in oil and gas exploration within the Sichuan Basin.
The inaugural meeting of the Second Geological Exploration Committee was chaired by Professor Zhou Wen, Deputy Executive Director of the Committee. Speeches were delivered by Guo Xusheng, member of CAE, and Wen Long, Vice Chairman of the Sichuan Petroleum Institute, Deputy General Manager and Chief Geologist of Southwest Branch of PetroChina. They commended the Committee's previous efforts and extended congratulations on the formation of the new Committee. This session saw the addition of four new units and 29 new members, enhancing the composition of member units and expert members. The Committee elected one director, nine (executive) deputy directors, one secretary-general, and six (executive) deputy secretaries-generals. Following the Committee's establishment, Secretary-General Luo Qiang of the Sichuan Petroleum Institute delivered an important address. He provided a comprehensive overview of the Sichuan Petroleum Institute's organizational structure and recent activities, and proposed suggestions for the future work of the Geological Exploration Committee.
Following the inaugural meeting, the Second Geological Exploration Committee hosted its first academic symposium on "Deep Oil and Gas Exploration in the Sichuan Basin." The event featured 11 presentations from experts representing CDUT, Southwest Petroleum University, PetroChina, Sinopec, and BGP. Discussions covered a range of topics, including conventional oil and gas in the deep carbonate rocks of the Sinian-Cambrian and Permian Maokou formations, tight gas in the Xujiahe formation, unconventional oil and gas in the Cambrian and Permian, advanced deep high-resolution seismic acquisition techniques, and practices for enhancing estimated ultimate recovery (EUR) in shale gas geological engineering integration. These topics captivated the attending experts, sparking robust discussions. Professor Zhou Wen from the College of Modern Shale Gas Industry at CDUT made a presentation titled Advances in Hydrocarbon Geology of the Sinian-Cambrian in the Northern Sichuan Basin and Exploration Recommendations. The Director of the Second Geological Exploration Committee, Hu Dongfeng, concluded the symposium with a summative speech, lauding the event's success. He highlighted that the symposium provided valuable new insights across various fields, with some presentations offering direct guidance for future oil and gas exploration. Hu emphasized the importance of organizing further in-depth academic discussions on emerging hot topics to reinforce the Committee's role in driving innovation and setting standards in the field.
