Part of the List of Winners
Themed on “Heralding the New Era of Literary Excellence, Embarking on the New Journey of Classics,” the contest aimed to promote the rich tapestry of the Chinese language and culture through diverse language-oriented activities, such as recitation, interpretation, calligraphy, and seal carving. Its goal was to extract wisdom and fortitude from the wellspring of Chinese classics, reinforce ideals and beliefs, and embody the zeitgeist. In response to the notification, CDUT proactively mobilized and engaged international students to participate in the contest. In a bid to showcase the international students’ comprehension and innovative interpretations of Chinese classics, the trio jointly recited three poems written by Su Shi, a celebrated poet from Sichuan: Charm of a Singer (Tune) - Memories of the Past at Red Cliff, Jiangchengzi (Tune) - Setting Off for a Hunt in Mizhou, and Water Melody. This exquisite recitation, titled Su Dongpo Poetry Recitation, was submitted as their entry for the esteemed contest.

Participants
Shu (ancient name of Sichuan area) was a haven for prodigious talents, and those three Su (three talents from Su family) shined brightly. To facilitate a profound comprehension of these literary works and grasp the cultural essence they convey, the Office of International Exchange and Cooperation of CDUT led international students on an enlightening journey to the San Su Shrine Museum. Here, they immersed themselves in the tales of the Su family, imbibed the family’s virtuous legacy, and embraced the lifestyle exemplified by the Su family. Delving deeply into the family ethos, characterized by the principles of “Dedicate yourself to scholarship and occupation, adhere to filial piety, benevolence and love, and never gain profits by mean ways,” the three students, standing in the traditional and classical garden architecture of the San Su Shrine, passionately recited three poetic verses: Charm of a Singer (Tune) - Memories of the Past at Red Cliff, Jiangchengzi (Tune) - Setting Off for a Hunt in Mizhou, and Water Melody. These masterpieces were melded into one titled Su Dongpo Poetry Recitation, which they submitted for the classic recitation competition. Following a rigorous selection process and expert evaluation, Su Dongpo Poetry Reading emerged triumphant, clinching the first prize in the international student category at the Sichuan Competition of 2023 Chinese Classics Recitation and Lecture Contest.
