Two CDUT Professors Named Valid Candidates for Election to the Chinese Academy of Engineering

The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) released on August 20 the list of valid candidates for the 2025 election of new academicians. A total of 639 candidates were named for CAS and 660 for CAE. The process will continue with external peer reviews and elections at the Academician General Assembly, where new members will be formally selected. Professors Liu Qingyou and Xu Qiang of CDUT have been named among the valid candidates for the CAE.

Liu Qingyou, male, Han ethnicity, born in October 1965 in Kaixian, Chongqing. He holds a Ph.D. in Petroleum Machinery from Southwest Petroleum University, has conducted postdoctoral research, and is a professor and doctoral supervisor. He serves as a member of the 8th Science and Technology Committee of the Ministry of Education, Chair of the Sichuan Provincial Instrument and Mechanics Professional Guidance Committee, Vice President of the Sichuan Petroleum Society, and Vice President of the Sichuan Mechanical Engineering Society. He is also a Distinguished Professor of the Chang Jiang Scholars Program of the Ministry of Education, one of the first leading talents selected for the national “Ten Thousand People’s Scheme, and Deputy Director of the State Key Laboratory of Oil and Gas Reservoir Geology and Exploitation. He currently serves as Secretary of the Party of CDUT Committee, presiding over the overall work of the Party Committee.

From September 1994 to June 1997, Liu studied petroleum machinery at Southwest Petroleum University and obtained his Ph.D. He began teaching at Southwest Petroleum University in July 1986, and successively held posts such as part-time student counselor, deputy secretary of a Party branch, head of a teaching and research office, director of the Drill Bit Laboratory, deputy director of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and executive vice dean of the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. He also served as Executive Vice Dean (at department head level) and Director of the Graduate School. He conducted postdoctoral research at the State Key Laboratory of Mechanical Transmission at Chongqing University. In June 2010, he became Chair of the Academic Committee of the Drill Bit Laboratory. From June 2010 to August 2014, he served as a member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice President of Southwest Petroleum University. From September 2014 to November 2018, he was Deputy Party Secretary and President of Xihua University. From December 2018 to October 2023, he was a member of the Party Committee, Standing Committee member, Deputy Party Secretary, and President of CDUT. Since October 2023, he has been the Secretary of the Party of CDUT.

Xu Qiang, male, Han ethnicity, born in June 1968 in Nanjiang, Sichuan Province. He holds a Ph.D. degree and is a professor and doctoral supervisor. He currently serves as President of CDUT, responsible for the university’s overall administrative work.

From September 1988 to July 1992, Xu studied hydrogeology and engineering geology as an undergraduate at Chengdu Institute of Geology. From July 1992 to July 1994, he studied engineering geology at Chengdu Institute of Technology as a master’s student. From July 1994 to July 1997, he pursued a doctoral degree in hydrogeology and engineering geology at Chengdu Institute of Technology. He began teaching at Chengdu Institute of Technology in July 1997. From January 2002 to January 2004, he served as Acting Dean of the School of Environment and Civil Engineering at CDUT, and from January 2004 to March 2014 as Dean of the same school. From March 2014, he was Executive Deputy Director of the State Key Laboratory of Geohazard Prevention and Geoenvironment Protection (CDUT). From May 2019 to October 2023, he served as the Vice President of CDUT. Since April 2022, he has also served as the Vice Chair of the Sichuan Provincial Committee of the Jiusan Society. In October 2023, he became the President of CDUT.
