Prof. Fan Xuanmei Won the 11th Huang Jiqing Youth Geological Science & Technology Award
On February 22, 2022, the Geological Society of China launched the application and recommendation for the 11th Huang Jiqing Youth Geological Science & Technology Award (hereinafter referred to as the “Award”), in order to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Geological Society of China and commend a group of young geological scientific and technological workers under the age of 45 and with outstanding contributions to geological science and technology in China. After preliminary evaluation by experts, publicity, and final evaluation, it was decided to grant 15 comrades, including Wang Liqiang, the 11th Huang Jiqing Youth Geological Science & Technology Award of the Geological Society of China. Specifically, there are three types of awards: Geosciences Researcher Award, Field Geologist Award, and Teacher Award. Prof. Fan Xuanmei of CDUT won the Geosciences Researcher Award therein from the Geological Society of China.
Since the Wenchuan Earthquake in 2008, Fan Xuanmei has been focusing on the research of "mechanism and prediction of geological disasters of strong earthquake", making important progress in the prediction of earthquake-induced geological disasters, post-earthquake disaster chain effect, and risk warning. Her research results have been practically applied to emergency rescue, post-disaster recovery and reconstruction, and disaster prevention and mitigation after many earthquakes, including Wenchuan Earthquake in 2008, Lushan Earthquake in 2013, Jiuzhaigou Earthquake in 2017, and the recent Luding Earthquake in 2022, and achieved significant socio-economic benefits.
It is learned that the Award was designed to commemorate the great contributions made by Huang Jiqing, a famous geologist, to the geological science and geological cause, encourage young geologists and geological workers to devote themselves to the geological cause, promote the prosperity and development of China's geological affairs, accelerate the national modernization, and make new contributions to building China into a world leader in science and technology.
