The second public open week activities were held in SKLGP(the State Key Laboratory of Geohazad Prevention and Geoenvironment Protection)from August 23 to 29, 2020, which aimed to popularize the knowledge of disaster prevention and mitigation and increase the awareness and skills of national self-rescue and act in line with “the Notice on National State Key Laboratories Launching Public Open Activities in National Science and Technology Activity Week by the Basic Research Department of the Ministry of Science and Technology in 2020” (the Basic Research Department of the Ministry of Science and Technology [2020] No. 9)”. The activities were mainly launched from the following three aspects:
1. Offline Plus Online forums—lectures on popularizing geological disasters and ecological environmental protection. On August 26, Professor Xu Qiang, the vice president of CDUT(Chengdu University of Technology)and executive deputy director of the SKLGP gave a science popularization lecture entitled “Geological Hazards and its Prevention and Control”, in which he made an introduction to the formation mechanism of the early identification, monitoring, early warning and emergency response of geological disasters; besides, Professor Liang Chuntao, a distinguished expert of the “Hundred Talents Program” for high-level talents in Sichuan Province, gave an academic report entitled “Getting to Know Earthquakes so as to Make Scientific Responses; Shouldering Our Responsibilities to Make Earthquake Prevention and Disaster Reduction”. In his report, he introduced the development and current condition of earthquake research; what’s more, Associate Researcher Li Weile made an explanation of the specific methods of landslide identification in his lecture named “The Hidden Hazards Recognition of Landslide by Visible Remote Sensing”; finally, Professor Lei Ningfei presented the post-disaster ecological restoration methods in her lecture “Ecological Restoration Techniques of Fragile Belt of Geological Environment in Cold and Arid Regions”. By the four professional and interesting lectures,which explained the in-depth knowledge in a simple way, a vivid publicity of the scientific and technical methods for each phase of geological disasters was made.

2. Livestream interaction—deciphering the high-tech of the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation of SKLGP. On August 28th, following the anchor, we made a visit to the SKLGP and had a better understanding of its instruments and equipment, the daily work of researchers, the “three checks” system of the early identification of hidden dangers of geological hazards, and the “geological disaster real-time monitoring and early warning system” and so on. The livestream has been viewed for more than 26,000 times, with nearly 800 real-time views and more than 130 interactions.

3. Feature videos plus common sense of disaster prevention—several popular science series videos were made independently or cooperatively and a column was set on its official website during the science and technology week. The videos include “2020—How to make an early warning of geological disasters like landslides” played by News and Science of Hunan TV, five episodes of popular micro-videos of earthquake, and videos about SKLGP’s scientific research results transformation displaying. The staff of SKLGP also compiled all kinds of popular science knowledge about geological disasters and worked together with their peers in the university’s museum to make some science essays about disaster prevention and mitigation on landslides for children. They were posted on the school museum’s WeChat public account. By the vivid and interesting videos supported by the media, the formation mechanism, hazards and countermeasures of geological disasters were shown to the public.

In the open week, we showed the public the great achievements made by our lab and popularized the knowledge of disaster prevention and mitigation by diverse innovative methods from multiple perspectives. We are going to put science popularization and technological innovation on the same place, act in line with the “Law of the People’s Republic of China on the Popularization of Science and Technology” and organize mass scientific and technological activities nationwide. That’s how we can consolidate the achievements of scientific popularization and scientific and technological activities over the past 20 years and make our contribution to realizing the Chinese dream of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
