Xu Qiang, born in June 1968 in Nanjiang, Sichuan, is a member of the Jiusan Society. He holds a Ph.D., is a professor, and a doctoral supervisor. He is responsible for overseeing all administrative affairs of CDUT.

Xu began his academic journey with a bachelor’s degree in Hydrology and Engineering Geology at Chengdu Institute of Geology from September 1988 to July 1992. He then pursued a master’s degree in Engineering Geology at Chengdu Institute of Technology from July 1992 to July 1994 and continued his doctoral studies in Hydrology and Engineering Geology at the same institution, earning his Ph.D. in July 1997. Xu joined the faculty of Chengdu Institute of Geology in July 1997. From January 2002 to January 2004, he served as Vice Dean (Acting Dean) of the School of Environment and Civil Engineering, and from January 2004 to March 2014, he was the Dean of the school. In March 2014, he became the Executive Deputy Director of the State Key Laboratory of Geohazard Prevention and Geoenvironment Protection at CDUT. He served as Vice President of CDUT from May 2019 to October 2023. Since April 2022, he has also held the position of Deputy Chairman of the Sichuan Provincial Committee of the Jiusan Society. In October 2023, he was appointed President of CDUT.

Xu Qiang has dedicated his career to the teaching and research of geological hazard prevention and mitigation. He has led over 60 significant scientific research projects, including those under the National Key R&D Program of China, 973 Program, major and key projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, among others. He has published more than 500 academic papers, with over 260 indexed in the SCIE database, authored 16 monographs, and holds more than 20 authorized invention patents. He has also contributed to the development of 3 industry standards and guidelines. As a core member, Xu's research achievements have been recognized with two First Prizes (as 2nd and 7th contributor) and one Second Prize (as 1st contributor) of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, along with seven First Prizes and four Second Prizes at the provincial levels. He has also received two First Prizes for Scientific and Technological Progress from national first-class societies. His research focuses on slope deformation and failure theories and preventive technologies, with notable achievements in understanding the mechanisms of landslides, as well as in early identification, monitoring, and early warning systems. Xu served as a core expert for the State Council, Ministry of Natural Resources, and the Sichuan Provincial Government, contributing to the emergency response efforts for dozens of major geological disasters across China. He was a member of the 12th and 13th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and a deputy to the 14th National People’s Congress (NPC), and he is also a member of the Central Committee of the Jiusan Society. His numerous accolades include being named a National Outstanding Professional and Technical Talent, receiving the National May 1st Labor Medal, the State Council Special Allowance, and the Li Siguang Geological Science Award. He is a Fellow of the Geological Society of China and has served on the 8th Academic Degree Evaluation Committee of the State Council of China. He has also been recognized as a leader of the Ministry of Education’s Innovative Research Team, a member of the Ministry of Education’s Teaching Steering Committee for Higher Education Institutions, a member of the 4th Expert Committee of the National Disaster Reduction Committee, a Leading Talent in Scientific and Technological Innovation by the Ministry of Land and Resources, an Advanced Individual in Earthquake Relief by the China Association for Science and Technology, and a Tianfu Outstanding Scientist under the Tianfu Ten-Thousand Talents Program.
