Chengdu University of Technology has 12 colleges and institutes in Natural Sciences teaching and research, including the College of Earth Sciences, the College of Energy, the College of Environment and Civil Engineering, the College of Geophysics, the College of Nuclear Technology and Automation Engineering, the College of Materials and Chemistry & Chemical Engineering, the College of Information Science and Technology, the College of Environment, the College of Cyber Security, the Institute of Sedimentary Geology, the College of Management Science, and the College of Tourism and Urban-Rural Planning. The key research areas of the university include the basic theory of earth science, oil and gas geology and exploration and development, earth exploration and nuclear technology methods and applications, geohazard prevention and control and geoenvironment protection, etc.
Chengdu University of Technology is an important national base for high-level talent training and scientific research in the natural sciences. There are two state key laboratories (State Key Laboratory of Geohazard Prevention and Geoenvironment Protection, and State Key Laboratory of Oil and Gas Reservoir Geology and Exploration), one key laboratory jointly established by the Ministry of Education and Sichuan Province, one key laboratory of the Ministry of Natural Resources, one key laboratory of State Environmental Protection, two field scientific observation and research bases of the Ministry of Land and Resources, two key laboratories of Sichuan Province, one engineering laboratory of Sichuan Province, one key laboratory of Sichuan University, one key laboratory of Sichuan Environmental Protection Department, and three "Collaborative Innovation Centers of Sichuan Provincial 2011 Programs" led by the university.
CDUT has successively undertaken a large number of important projects such as national major science and technology projects, national science and technology support programs, NSFC programs (including funds for major projects, innovative research groups, outstanding youth, international cooperation, etc.), national "863" program, national "973" program, and national geological survey program. By the end of 2018, CDUT has won a total of 913 national and provincial science and technology awards (times), including the special prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, the first prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, China International Science and Technology Cooperation Award, the second prize of the National Natural Science Award, the gold prize of the Chinese Patent Award, the third prize of the National Technological Inventions Award and the National Science and the first prize of Sichuan Province Science and Technology Progress; and received more than 1,300 licensed patents.
Based on the spirit of "Several Opinions on Further Improving Policies Including Fund Management of Research Projects by Central Finance" (ZBF [2016] No. 50), "Sixteen Policies to Stimulate Innovation and Entrepreneurship of Science and Technology Personnel in Sichuan Province" (CWB [2016] No. 47), "Implementation Opinions on Further Improving Policies Including Fund Management of Provincial Financial Research Projects" (CWB [2017] No. 2) and other superior documents, a series of documents on scientific research management, patent management methods, results grading, scientific research reward and performance management and others were issued successively from July 2017 to December 2018, with the main purpose of introducing external talents and motivating internal talents, gathering high-level talents, stimulating innovation and entrepreneurship, accelerating the application of results and improving the management system. The series of documents are in line with the spirit of national and Sichuan provincial documents at all levels, granting scientific researchers full autonomy in scientific research and transformation of achievements, invigorating the innovation and creativity of scientific researchers, improving the output rate of scientific and technological achievements, accelerating the transformation of achievements, so as to contribute better to the university's discipline construction and talent training, and provide reliable support for the building of CDUT into "a world first-class university with first-class disciplines".
It is one of the primary functions of the university to carry out industry-university-research cooperation and serve society with our scientific and technological achievements in natural sciences. In recent years, the university has cooperated with Sichuan cities such as Chengdu, Dazhou, Nanchong, and government departments of Jiangsu Changzhou, Xuzhou, Fengxian County, Peixian County, Shandong Zibo, etc., as well as large and medium-sized state-owned enterprises such as Sichuan Earthquake Administration, PetroChina Changqing Oilfield Company (PCOC), and PetroChina Southwest Oil and Gasfield Company on matters of scientific and technological cooperation and transformation of results, and signed strategic cooperation agreements. The university has actively participated in disaster relief and prevention work such as the "May 12" earthquake relief and post-disaster reconstruction, the battle of Danba County, the battle of Shiziliang mountain in Qingchuan, and the "April 20" Lushan earthquake relief to ensure the safety and property of people. Deeming it its duty to serve the development and construction of the country, industries and localities, CDUT has actively participated in the construction of projects such as west-to-east power transmission, west-to-east gas transmission, south-to-north water diversion, Qinghai-Tibet railway, oil and gas geological exploration, energy development, large hydropower stations, regional and urban environment and large transportation infrastructure.
