School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering
The School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering developed from the faculty of Mineral Prospecting Engineering specialty of Department Three ( dubbed "Old Department Three" in the academic community), founded in 1956, of the former Beijing College of Geology. Since the integration of the Department Three into Chengdu College of Geology in 1965, it has accumulated a huge body of expertise and developed a simple academic atmosphere over its continuous 60 years of practice in education. In 1999, it was approved as the "Talent Cultivation Base of the Undergraduate Program of Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation". The School's program of Mechanical Engineering became a pilot discipline of the state Excellent Engineers Education and Training Program in 2013, one of the first model undergraduate programs of applied disciplines of Sichuan Province in 2017 and one of the first state first-class undergraduate disciplines in 2019. It is also the supporting discipline of two primary disciplines, "Nuclear Science and Technology" and "Petroleum and Natural Gas", of which the University are qualified to issue doctoral degrees. The School has been developing its programs and disciplines through the State Key Laboratory of Oil and Gas Reservoir Geology and Exploration, the State Key Laboratory of Geohazard Prevention and Geoenvironment Protection, China South Industries Group Corporation-Chengdu University of Technology Collaborative Key Laboratory, China South Industries Group Corporation-Chengdu University of Technology Industry-Academic Cross-Fertilization Base, the Key Laboratory of Applied Nuclear Techniques in Geoscience of Sichuan Province, the state Demonstration Center for Experimental Teaching on Nuclear Resources Exploration Techniques, the state Training Center for Engineering Practice in Nuclear Industry, and the state Virtual and Simulated Experimental Teaching Platform. With a complete system in place to cultivate undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral students, it has delivered a great number of professionals in the mechanical and electronic fields for the construction of the country.
The School initiated and led the University's discipline cluster of "Intelligent Equipment and Industrial Internet", and has aimed at meeting the urgent needs of high-end intelligent equipment to resist the extremely harsh conditions of high heat, high pressure, extreme cold, lack of oxygen, and high radioactivity in highlands, or deep beneath the earth or water, which are common in the prospecting of mines, the drilling and extracting of oil and gas, the exploration of nuclear power/energy, the construction of the Sichuan-Tibet railway and the development of weaponry industry in Sichuan province and the western region. With that aim, it has been concentrating resources and efforts to achieve technological breakthroughs and cultivate talents to serve in the fields of "geological, mineral, oil, nuclear and weaponry industries". Committed to promote the fusion of Mechanical Engineering, Electronic Information, Artificial Intelligence, Communication Engineering, Information Engineering, and the Center of Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering Technology, it has continued to expand the discipline cluster of "Intelligent Equipment and Industrial Internet" in scope and depth, strengthening the building of professional faculty and the cultivation of talents. In addition, it has been optimizing its characteristic courses on intelligent manufacturing according to the orientation of the discipline, and building a 3-tiered system with discipline orientation, program arrangement and course optimization coordinated to form a long-term mechanism for virtuous development.
The School has more than 3200 enrolled students, of which more than 2800 are undergraduates and more than 400 are master's and doctoral students. Introducing talented professionals widely from abroad and at home, it has a faculty of more than 110 members. Among them, there are 26 professors, 38 associate professors, 16 doctoral supervisors and 68 lecturers with a doctoral degree. Besides, there are 1 Distinguished Professor of Cheung Kong Scholars Program, 1 national candidate for the "New Century Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Talent Project", 2 experts of the State Council Special Government Allowances, 1 Tower-Top talent of Sichuan Province, 1 talent of the Craftsmen of the Nation, 2 academic and technological leaders and 5 reserve talents of Sichuan Province, 1 recipient of the May 1 Labor Medal of Sichuan Province, 10 persons of the Mount Everest Talent Program.
The School is composed of five departments, one division and two centers which are the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the Department of Electronic Information, the Department of Communication Engineering, the Department of Information Engineering, the Department of Industrial Design, the Division of the Study of Engineering Drawings, the Center of Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering Technology, and the Experiment Center. Guided by the national“ Made in China 2025”strategy and the provincial "5+1" planning for the five major trillion-yuan industrial systems, it has been actively seeking industrial transformation centering on intelligent manufacturing of high-end equipment, closely following the needs of national and western region’s economic growth. With its teaching programs featuring the high-end intelligent equipment and by the principle of "engineering-oriented, results-guided, and continuous innovation", it has been cultivating both application-oriented and research-oriented high-calibre technological talents, especially those who are systematically equipped with basic theories and expertise, capable of solving intricate engineering problems, international-minded, and leading the way in the realm of engineering. Over more than 60 years of construction and development, the School has played an important role in the building of teaching teams, scientific research, talent cultivation, the building of new think tanks and social services.
