College  of Mathematics and Physics

Developed from the teaching and research sections of math and physics of the former Chengdu College of Geological Exploration, the College  of Mathematics and Physics of Chengdu University of Technology has a long history of education. It began to recruit students for undergraduate programs of Physics and Mathematical Geology in 1977, students for the undergraduate program of Math in 1978, students for the postgraduate program of Geological Math in 1981, students for the undergraduate program of Applied Math in 1985, students for the doctoral program of Geological Math in 1990, students for the postgraduate program of Applied Math in 1996 and students for the postgraduate program of Computational Math in 2001.

The College offers 4 undergraduate programs: Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Information and Computing Science, Applied Statistics, and Applied Physics. And the degrees it has been approved to confer include doctor’s degrees in two secondary disciplines including Mathematical Geology, and Earth Survey and Information Technology, master's degrees in two primary disciplines which are Mathematics and Physics, professional master's degrees in Applied Statistics, and master's degree of the secondary discipline Mathematical Geology. The program Mathematics and Applied Mathematics is a national characteristic major and a state-level first-class undergraduate major, and the program of Information and Computing Science is a provincial characteristic major and also a provincial first-class undergraduate major.

Currently, the College has the Department of Applied Mathematics, the Department of Applied Statistics (Information and Computing Science), the Department of Physics, the Teaching Division of Basic Mathematics, the Teaching Division of University Physics(including the Laboratory for University Physics), the Math Laboratory and other teaching facilities. In addition, there are the provincial Key Laboratory for Mathematical Geology of Sichuan Province, the University's Institute of Digital Hu's Line, the provincial Demonstration Center for Experimental Teaching on Mathematical Application and Computer Simulation and other teaching platforms. In 2020, it became a collaborator in the construction of the National Center for Applied Mathematics of Sichuan Province.

The College has a faculty team of 118 members, including 20 professors, 47 associate professors, 10 doctoral supervisors, 57 master's student supervisors, 15 talents from the Mount Everest Talents Program, 43 lecturers with doctor's degrees, 1 recipient of the Government Allowances of the State Council, 7 academic and technological leaders and reserve candidates of Sichuan Province, and 1 winner of the Distinguished Teacher Award in Higher Education Institutions of Sichuan Province. Meanwhile, it has 1043 registered full-time students, including 877 undergraduates, 158 postgraduates and 8 doctoral students.

In the recent five years, the College's faculty have undertaken 30 state-level projects, 50 ministerial and provincial projects, 55 departmental (bureau-level) projects, and 26 projects commissioned by local governments and businesses with an aggregate research fund of RMB30 million; they have published more than 120 SCI-indexed theses, written 22 textbooks and monographs, and taken out 22 invention patents ( software copyright ); they have delivered 15 provincial first-class courses, exquisite courses, online courses, and open courses, 28 ministerial and provincial (including the University-level ) teaching reform projects, and 7 industry-academic collaboration talent projects of the Ministry of Education; they have been honored with 3 prizes of the University's Teaching Achievement Awards, and various provincial (including the University-level ) awards in lecturing competitions for 23 person-times with 7 high-level theses published on teaching reforms. Among the faculty, 15 are pillars of the University's lecturing and research team, 1 is in the Mathematical Geology Teaching Group of Sichuan Province, and 1 is in the Research and Innovation Team on Mathematical Geology of colleges and universities financially supported by the provincial government of Sichuan. Through the accumulation and passing down of heritage over the years, the College has oriented itself toward studies of Basic Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Computational Mathematics, Mathematical Statistics, Mathematical Geosciences, Condensed Matter Physics, Physics of Atoms and Molecules, Optics, and Computational Physics etc., input a lot of efforts in research on differential equations and dynamic systems, numerical computation and application of nonlinear partial differential equations, mineral resources projection theories and methods, optoelectronic materials and devices, spectral diagnoses and atomic spectra, optical imaging and display, and electromagnetic scattering and multi-physics simulation etc., and realized a series of domestically leading research achievements that meet international criteria.

Driven by the objective of building the University into "a world-class university with world-class disciplines", the College has adhered to the principles of operating a university with talent cultivation at its center, disciplinary development as the cardinal line, faculty improvement as the focal point, and cross-fertilization of science and technology as the point of emphasis, and directed its efforts at cultivating talents who are well equipped with solid theories of math and physics, strongly innovative and capable of carrying out theories and thoughts into practice to do fundamental research and applied fundamental research. To date, it has cultivated more than 4000 excellent graduates, many of which have been playing a prominent role in enterprises and public institutions such as governmental departments, higher education institutions, scientific research institutes, state-owned businesses, domestic and overseas financial institutions and in the field of land and resources.

Standing at the starting point of the 2nd Centenary Goal to turn China into a modern socialist country that is prosperous, strong, democratic, culturally advanced, and harmonious by the time the People's Republic of China celebrates its centenary in 2049 and guided by the Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, the College has been faithfully implementing the state Guidelines on Strengthening Talent Cultivation for Fundamental Disciplines, Guidelines on Comprehensively Strengthening Research in Fundamental Science, the provincial Implementation Guidelines on Comprehensively Strengthening Fundamental Research and Applied Fundamental Research and the guidelines of the University's 2nd Congress of the Communist Party of China. Tasked with talent cultivation, scientific research, and social services, it has been furthering teaching reform on basic education of math and physics, advancing the quality of talent cultivation, developing characteristic disciplines and specialties, and improving its operating capability, academic competitiveness, social influence and internationalization level.
