In response to China’s open strategy for education and to deepen the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative, Chengdu University of Technology (CDUT) welcomed Professor Cruz Elías Ibadango Anrrango, Dean of the Faculty of Geology, Mining, Petroleum and Environment Engineeringat Central University of Ecuador, for an official visit from June 17 to 19. His visit aimed to strengthen practical cooperation between the two institutions in joint degree programs, collaborative research, and high-level international talents cultivation. During his visit, Prof. Ibadango met with Vice President of CDUT Hou Mingcai and held talks with representatives from the Department of International Exchanges & Cooperation, the College of International Education, the State Key Laboratory of Oil and Gas Reservoir Geology and Exploitation, and the State Key Laboratory of Geohazard Prevention and Geoenvironment Protection at CDUT. He was also accompanied by staff from the Department and the College on a field visit to CNPC Chuanqing Drilling Engineering Company Limited—a strategic partner of both universities—where he toured departments such as the International Engineering Division, the Drilling and Production Technology Research Institute, and the Safety, Environmental Protection, and Quality Supervision Institute.
During his meeting with Vice President Hou, Prof. Ibadango gave a comprehensive overview of the development and achievements of Central University of Ecuador in the fields of geology, petroleum, and mining. He expressed a strong desire to deepen cooperation with CDUT, achieve resource sharing and complementary strengths, and highly praised CDUT’s International Summer School program.
Vice President Hou warmly welcomed Prof. Ibadango and emphasized that CDUT, as one of China’s earliest and most prominent universities in the fields of geology and energy, shares strong disciplinary alignment with the School of Geology, Mining, and Environment at Central University of Ecuador. He expressed hope that this visit would serve as a catalyst for expanding the scope and depth of cooperation between the two institutions, particularly in joint research and talent training.

Prof. Ibadango also held in-depth discussions with the Department of International Exchanges & Cooperation and the College of International Education. The College provided an overview of CDUT’s current development and reviewed key milestones in the collaboration between the two institutions. The two parties conducted detailed discussions on upcoming joint initiatives. Prof. Ibadango expressed his intention to encourage faculty and students from Central University of Ecuador to participate in CDUT’s educational and academic programs, with the goal of promoting deeper integration in discipline development and talent training. In recognition of his contributions, Prof. Ibadango was appointed as a Visiting Professor at CDUT. Later, Prof. Ibadango visited the State Key Laboratory of Oil and Gas Reservoir Geology and Exploitation, where he learned about the laboratory’s development history, research focus areas, key scientific achievements, and its significant influence in the international academic community.

At the State Key Laboratory of Geohazard Prevention and Geoenvironment Protection, Prof. Ibadango participated in a focused discussion. Laboratory leaders introduced the lab’s mission and research progress. Prof. Ibadango delivered a presentation on landslide hazards along Ecuadorian roadways, sharing his country’s research outcomes and practical experience in geohazard assessment and mitigation. Both sides explored frontier research topics in geological hazard science, discussing innovations in research methodology, the application of monitoring technologies, and the optimization of prevention strategies.

Accompanied by representatives from CDUT’s Department of International Exchanges & Cooperation and College of International Education, Prof. Ibadango and his delegation visited multiple departments at CNPC Chuanqing Drilling Engineering Company Limited, including the International Engineering Division, Drilling and Production Technology Research Institute, and the Safety, Environmental Protection and Quality Supervision Institute. Discussions focused on exploring tripartite university-industry collaboration, including joint laboratories, practical training programs, and international talent development.

CDUT will take this opportunity to further implement China’s strategy for the internationalization of education, actively advance cooperative projects with Central University of Ecuador, and continue expanding the scope and depth of international exchange and collaboration—enhancing the university’s global presence and international education capacity.
