To promote substantive academic exchange and cooperation with world-class universities, Chengdu University of Technology (CDUT) hosted the delegation from the University of Alberta, led by Professor Carlos Cruz-Noguez, Associate Dean of the College of Natural and Applied Sciences. The delegation’s visit marked the successful launch of the “University of Alberta-CDUT Academic Exchange Week,” opening a new chapter in bilateral collaboration.
On the morning of May 22, Professor Cruz-Noguez and his delegation paid a special visit to Professor Xu Qiang, President of CDUT. During the meeting, both parties engaged in in-depth discussions on strengthening cooperation mechanisms and expanding collaborative areas.
Both sides agreed that, building upon the solid foundation and fruitful outcomes of prior collaboration, future efforts should focus on expanding the scope of cooperation. This includes leveraging complementary strengths in key academic disciplines, sharing resources, and jointly cultivating high-caliber talent, with the aim of advancing educational and cultural exchange between the two universities. During the visit, CDUT also provided a detailed introduction to its Chinese Government Scholarship International Summer School Program. Professor Cruz-Noguez expressed strong interest in the initiative, noting that as a first-time visitor to Chengdu, he was deeply impressed by the city’s rich cultural heritage, open and inclusive atmosphere, and vibrant spirit. He affirmed that upon returning to Canada, he would actively promote the participation of University of Alberta faculty and students in this program to help them gain a deeper understanding of China and experience its unique charm.

From May 19 to 23, the delegation delivered a series of academic lectures for faculty and students from CDUT’s College of Environment and Civil Engineering, College of Ecology and Environment, College of Earth and Planetary Sciences, College of Energy, College of Computer Science and Cyber Security, the State Key Laboratory of Geohazard Prevention and Geoenvironment Protection, and the State Key Laboratory of Oil and Gas Reservoir Geology and Exploitation. In addition to the lectures, the delegation also participated in a field-based geological survey in the Beichuan earthquake-affected area, engaging in active discussions with CDUT scholars on frontier topics in geological science. During the visit, the delegation also conducted interviews for the China Scholarship Council-University of Alberta Joint Doctoral Scholarship Program. One master’s student from the College of Environment and Civil Engineering performed exceptionally well and successfully passed the interview, earning eligibility to apply for the 2026 program cycle.
Academic Lecture Session
The delegation also held in-depth discussions with various CDUT departments, including the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges, Academic Affairs Office, Human Resources Office, and Graduate School. Topics covered included joint applications for international exchange programs, collaborative research projects, faculty and talent recruitment, and joint training of innovative and high-potential students. Multiple agreements were reached during these exchanges.
The successful conclusion of the University of Alberta-CDUT Academic Exchange Week not only strengthened mutual understanding and trust but also set a clear direction for future cooperation. CDUT will take this visit as a valuable opportunity to further advance its partnership with the University of Alberta and actively implement the shared goals established during the visit, jointly contributing new momentum to the internationalization of higher education.
