On the afternoon of July 27th, 2024, Literary Affinity: Alai and Latin America: A Dialogue between Renowned Author Alai and Spanish Translator Liljana was convened at Alai’s Study, an initiative organized by the College of International Education and the College of Foreign Languages & Cultures at CDUT, with Alai’s Study taking on the role of the host. The esteemed Alai, Chairman of the Sichuan Writers’ Association, Professor Liljana Arsovska from the Institute for Asian and African Studies at the College of Mexico A.C., Sun Xintang, Director of the Latin American Language and Culture Center and the World Sinology Center for Latin American Sinology and Culture at Beijing Language and Culture University, Liu Yongzhi, Dean of the College of Foreign Languages & Cultures at CDUT, and Li Shan, Dean of the College of International Education, were among the dignitaries in attendance. Several graduate students from the College of Mexico A.C. participating in CDUT’s summer school, along with scholars and faculty from local institutions, were also present. The event was expertly moderated by Sun Xintang.

At the onset of the event, Alai, acclaimed for his poetry collection Suomo River, novel collections Bloodstains of the Bygone Years and The Silversmith in the Moonlight, and the full-length novels Red Poppies and Empty Mountain, as well as being a recipient of the prestigious Mao Dun Literature Prize, reflected on his 2017 literary lectures in Latin America. His experiences there immersed him in the distinct allure of Latin American literature and facilitated profound exchanges with local authors and readers. These encounters not only broadened his literary horizons but also infused his writing with fresh inspiration. He emphasized the importance of not confining oneself to the works of Márquez or One Hundred Years of Solitude alone, but to also appreciate the robust humanistic spirit of Latin American writers and their multifaceted responses to the region’s history. To truly grasp the essence of Latin American literature, one must delve into its history, religion, and economic contexts.

Professor Liljana, the chief Chinese translator for the Mexican National Palace and a distinguished Sinologist, shared her insights on translating Alai’s The Fairy Ring. She lauded the work for its delicate narrative and profound essence, which encapsulates the unique stories and cultural nuances of the Chinese landscape. Through this translation, she gained a deeper appreciation for the charm of Chinese literature and aspires to see more outstanding Chinese literary works make their way to Latin America, allowing its readers to experience the richness and depth of Chinese literary tradition. She repeatedly employed the term “great” to describe Alai’s oeuvre, expressing admiration for his exceptional storytelling abilities that weave complex emotions and profound thoughts into vivid narratives, immersing readers in the experience.

The interactive session concluded with a lively atmosphere, as the audience engaged with questions on various topics, including creative inspiration, character development, literary comprehension, and translation techniques. Additionally, Alai’s admirers recited a specially prepared poem, offering a unique tribute to his literary contributions.
The dialogue was also live-streamed on Douyin, attracting over 1.6 million viewers. This exchange of literary dialogue and cross-cultural communication fostered a deeper understanding and appreciation of each other’s literary and cultural heritage between the Chinese and Latin American communities, opening a window for the Chinese to explore Latin American literature. Since establishing overseas teaching sites in Latin American countries in 2023, CDUT has been at the forefront of promoting Sino-Latin American cultural exchanges. The recent collaboration with the Institute for Asian and African Studies of the College of Mexico A.C., the organization of a summer seminar on the dissemination of Chinese language and culture, and the initiation of this dialogue are all steps toward the international promotion of contemporary Chinese literature. Looking ahead, CDUT remains committed to fostering cultural exchanges and mutual enlightenment between China and the world, including Latin America.
