Source: DICE Date:2025.06.05

To promote interdisciplinary integration and innovation among mathematics, geosciences, and statistics, the 2025 International Symposium on Geoscience Big Data Statistics and Applications was successfully held from May 16 to 18 at Chengdu University of Technology (CDUT). The event was co-hosted by the School of Mathematical Sciences, the Mathematics Research Center, the National Center for Applied Mathematics in Sichuan, the Sichuan Mathematical Society, the Sichuan Chapter of the China Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (CSIAM), and the Geomathematics Key Laboratory of Sichuan Province. CDUT Vice Party Secretary Hu Bing, Party Committee Standing Member and Vice President Zhou Zhongli, along with heads of relevant departments and faculty and student representatives, attended the symposium.

Opening Ceremony

Zhou Zhongli chaired the opening ceremony and Hu Bing extended warm greetings to all experts, teachers, and students in attendance. Prof. Hu noted that CDUT has a strong foundation in geosciences and mathematics. In 2024, the university was approved for the first-level doctoral program in mathematics and established its Mathematics Research Center. He emphasized that this symposium brought together leading scholars to foster interdisciplinary collaboration between geosciences, mathematics, and statistics, and to enhance academic exchange and cooperation. He reaffirmed the universitys commitment to supporting the development of discipline and building a hub for academic and applied mathematics.

Hu Bings Address

Lin Huazhen from Southwestern University of Finance and Economics highlighted that the symposium serves as a vital platform for academic exchange and innovation in the geosciences. She encouraged participants to engage in meaningful discussions, share cutting-edge research, and jointly explore statistical methodologies and applications for geoscience big data.

Lin Huazhens Speech

Zhang Xu, Director of the Sichuan Chapter of the CSIAM, emphasized the challenges posed by massive data processing in the geosciences in the era of big data. He pointed out that mathematics and statistics are now essential tools driving innovation in geoscientific research. This symposium, he added, creates an important academic bridge for interdisciplinary collaboration, fostering integration and inspiring new ideas.

Zhang Xus Remarks

Following the opening ceremony, the academic presentation and discussion sessions commenced, moderated by Hu Bing. Associate Professor Liu Bingli from CDUT delivered a keynote presentation titled Geoscience Big Data Statistics and Intelligent Mineral Exploration. He elaborated on the research background, recent breakthroughs, and future directions of CDUTs work in combining geoscience with big data and artificial intelligence for mineral exploration.

Subsequent sessions featured expert discussions on the development of geoscience big data statistics and applications. Chen Min emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary integration and commended the universitys strong support for related research. Zhu Zhongyi called for enhanced efforts in attracting young talent and resources to build a strong new generation of researchers. Sun Liuquan highlighted the need for increased research funding to further advance related projects. Over a dozen other scholars also offered insightful suggestions and perspectives, ranging from technological innovation and talent development to cross-disciplinary cooperation. All of them contributed to charting the path forward for geoscience data statistics.

Expert Insights

On the afternoon of May 17, scholars from renowned universities and research institutions around the world delivered online presentations. These academic reports covered cutting-edge topics such as remote sensing image processing, multimodal visual learning, land cover mapping, disaster response, medical image analysis, and multivariate statistical control. The sessions facilitated deep exchanges on the latest research findings and application advances.

Online International Academic Reports Session

The symposium invited over 30 distinguished scholars, including Prof. Chen Min (Shanxi University), Prof. Lin Huazhen (Southwestern University of Finance and Economics), Prof. Zhang Xu (Sichuan University), Prof. Zhu Zhongyi (Fudan University), Prof. Sun Liuquan (Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences), Prof. Zhao Peng (Jiangsu Normal University), Prof. Zou Guohua (Capital Normal University), Prof. Liu Yanyan (Wuhan University), and international experts from institutions such as Tohoku University (Japan). The hybrid-format symposium attracted participation from over 200 faculty members and students.

The successful convening of this symposium provided a high-level academic platform for experts in geoscience big data statistics and applications. It promoted the exchange of cutting-edge theories and technologies, significantly advancing the interdisciplinary integration and innovation among mathematics, geosciences, and statistics.
