State Key Laboratory of Geohazard Prevention and Geoenvironment Protection Holds First Meeting of the First Academic Committee

On March 29, the first meeting of the inaugural Academic Committee of the State Key Laboratory of Geohazard Prevention and Geoenvironment Protection was held in Chengdu. The opening ceremony was attended by 14 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, as well as officials from national ministries including the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, and representatives from the provincial government. Leaders from key provincial departments, such as the Department of Education, Department of Science and Technology, Department of Natural Resources, Department of Ecology and Environment, and Department of Emergency Management, also participated in the event. Representatives from research institutions, enterprises, and renowned experts in the field were present at the ceremony. Liu Qingyou, Party Secretary of Chengdu University of Technology (CDUT), delivered the welcome speech. Xu Qiang, President of the university, presided over the opening ceremony.

Mr. Liu Qingyou extended a warm welcome on behalf of CDUT to the attending leaders and experts, and expressed gratitude for their long-standing support for the university. He emphasized that CDUT regards the development of the Laboratory as a top priority within its Double First-Class initiative. This meeting would serve as an important opportunity to gather insights and suggestions from leaders and academicians, align the Laboratorys work with national strategic needs, refine its development direction, optimize its construction plan, and innovate implementation strategies. These efforts aim to accelerate the Laboratorys high-quality development, support Chinas scientific and technological self-reliance, and contribute more significantly to the modernization of the country.

Mr. Xu Qiang thanked the experts for their valuable guidance and suggestions. He stated that the Laboratory would carefully study and implement these recommendations. Looking ahead, the Laboratory will continue to align with the country’s major needs, focus on solving real-world problems, strengthen organized and collaborative research efforts, foster an open and dynamic research ecosystem, and deepen international exchanges and cooperation. These initiatives aim to address critical and core technological challenges and make meaningful contributions to national scientific and technological advancement.

In the afternoon, the Laboratory held an appointment ceremony for the Academic Committee members. Liu Qingyou presented letters of appointment to the chair and members of the first Academic Committee. Fan Xuanmei, Director of the Laboratory, introduced the Laboratory’s current progress and future development plans. The experts of the Academic Committee fully acknowledged the achievements the Laboratory has made since its establishment. They suggested the Laboratory further focus on national strategies and international scientific frontiers, strengthen basic and interdisciplinary research, promote a balance between organized research and independent exploration, deepen both domestic and international collaboration, and enhance talent development. They expressed hope that the Laboratory will make breakthroughs in theoretical research, technological innovation, and major applications, thereby advancing China’s capabilities in geohazard prevention and geoenvironmental protection and securing a stronger position in global scientific and technological competition, ultimately contributing to the nation’s socioeconomic development.
