On February 8, 2025, a devastating landslide struck Jinping Village in Muai Town, Junlian County, Yibin City, Sichuan Province, resulting in significant casualties.
Following the disaster, Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and President of the People’s Republic of China, expressed deep concern and issued critical directives to enhance disaster prevention and safety risk assessments, emphasizing the importance of accountability and the resolute prevention of major and catastrophic incidents. He called for improved monitoring and early warning systems, urging a scientific approach to rescue operations and preventing secondary disasters.
In the face of this grave crisis, CDUT’s State Key Laboratory of Geohazard Prevention and Geoenvironment Protection, along with the College of Environment and Civil Engineering, responded immediately. A team was dispatched, including Professors Zhao Jianjun, Fu Ronghua, Ji Feng, Research Fellow Peng Dalei, and Assistant Research Fellow Lai Qiyi, who arrived at the scene with specialized equipment to assist in the emergency rescue efforts. Additionally, an indoor remote sensing interpretation and deformation analysis team was formed, consisting of Professors Dong Xiujun, Yang Yinghui, Li Weile, and Lecturer Li Qingmiao.
The investigation team utilized drones to capture 3D imagery of the site and generated oblique photogrammetric models. They combined the region’s engineering geological conditions to produce a landslide profile that supported rescue decision-making. Furthermore, InSAR technology was employed to assess the landslide’s progression before and after the event, providing precise scientific data to guide disaster relief operations.
