The General Office of the Ministry of Education has recently unveiled the honorees of the 2023 "Campaign to Honor and Promote Fine Traditional Chinese Culture" for universities. Among the distinguished entries, CDUT's project, "ICH in Practice: Building Youth Dreams Together," has been selected for the prestigious Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Academy Video Exhibition. This accolade is a testament to CDUT's commitment to fostering a deep sense of national pride and cultural education among its community. It is the first time CDUT has been honored in this campaign since its inception, showcasing CDUT's dedication to cultural nurturing and educational excellence. The campaign, which encompasses three specialized activities, has shortlisted 300 exceptional achievements, with 12 entries from Sichuan's higher education institutions making the prestigious list.

the Winners' List

In 2023, adhering to Xi Jinping's cultural ethos, we embarked on a comprehensive endeavor to delve into and articulate the richness of China's fine traditional culture. Our mission was to bolster the youth's affinity, engagement, and sense of achievement with our cultural legacy, thereby fortifying the collective identity of the Chinese nation. We were committed to narrating the tales of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) and to broadcasting the essence of Sichuan and Chongqing's cultural tapestry. In accordance with the directives outlined in the Notice on Organizing the 2023 'Campaign to Honor and Promote Fine Traditional Chinese Culture' Promotion and Education Activities in Universities by the General Office of the Ministry of Education, and under the aegis of the Publicity Department of Party Committee and the News Center, the College of Communication Science and Art joined forces with the Chengdu ICH Conservation Center. Together, we established a shared community for the perpetuation and promotion of ICH, launching a suite of ICH events on campus to invigorate the CDUT ICH brand. Throughout the year, we strategically invited over 20 ICH inheritors, spanning a rich array of arts such as Sichuan opera, Sichuan embroidery, palm weaving, sugar painting, shadow play, copper teapot tea art, jin qian ban (a kind of comic clapper talk), and paper-cutting, to impart their knowledge and skills at the Sichuan Opera Communication Museum, our dedicated ICH (Sichuan opera) transmission and exhibition space. This initiative engaged students and teachers in an immersive, step-by-step journey through ICH, from experiencing to learning, integrating, and innovating within the campus environment. By fostering new experiential scenarios for ICH, we cultivated a vibrant cultural milieu, yielding profound educational impact.

The College of Communication Science and Art at CDUT, drawing on its strengths as a national first-class program in art and media, has proactively engaged in local ICH preservation efforts. In a pioneering move, the college secured funding from the Sichuan Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism to host the Sichuan Embroidery Advanced Study Training Program. This initiative, which enrolled inheritors from across the province, is a testament to CDUT's commitment to modernizing the transmission of Sichuan embroidery. The program culminated in Sichuan's inaugural joint exhibition of "Sichuan Opera + Sichuan Embroidery," which drew a crowd of nearly 10,000 visitors, showcasing CDUT's impact on cultural education. The launch of the CDUT ICH Imaging Project has yielded over 40 audio-visual works and more than 20 digital cultural creative pieces, earning over 10 awards in national academic competitions. CDUT also spearheaded the ICH Digital Creative Work Competition across nationwide universities, which saw participation from over 700 universities and 18,000 students, underscoring its role in advancing the national strategy for digital ICH. CDUT's Everest Scientific Research Project, "A Team Crafting an Intangible Cultural Heritage Atlas: Exploring the Xizang, Qiang, and Yi Corridor on the Eastern Rim of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau," leverages CDUT's disciplinary expertise to conduct interdisciplinary research and practical applications on the digitalization, intellectualization, and sharing of ICH within the context of big data. This initiative is poised to establish a leading research and application base for ICH cultural heritage transmission and dissemination along the eastern rim of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau. CDUT's innovative approach to ICH is crystallizing into a distinctive campus cultural brand, ensuring robust support for CDUT's double world-class construction in cultural heritage and innovation.

The selected series of ICH display videos, including vlogs and promotional clips, chronicle the School of Communication Science and Art's two-year journey in harnessing educational and research resources for the transmission and dissemination of ICH. These visual narratives, shared via new media platforms such as the Chengdu ICH Conservation Center and Art Education of Sichuan, have captured the public's attention and earned accolades from the Sichuan Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism and the Chengdu Municipal Bureau of Culture, Broadcast-TV, and Tourism. Recognized for its contributions, CDUT's ICH heritage work has been featured in the 2023 Sichuan Cultural and Tourism Development Yearbook.

At the Scene

The "Campaign to Honor and Promote Fine Traditional Chinese Culture," spearheaded by the Ministry of Education, is a pivotal initiative designed to reinforce traditional Chinese cultural education and enhance campus cultural development. This campaign has effectively encouraged college students to actively preserve and promote the excellence of China's cultural heritage while nurturing and embodying the Core Socialist Values, resonating positively across the educational landscape and being highly esteemed by universities. The campaign's outcomes are woven into a suite of performance metrics for universities. The campaign was structured into three dynamic segments—"Red Homeland," "Ink-Washed Campus," and "ICH Academy." Under the organization of the Publicity Department of the Party Committee and the News Center, the School of Communication Science and Art actively submitted materials as part of the Everest Research Project—ICH Cultural Geography Atlas Construction Team. The team, overcoming the challenges of tight deadlines and substantial tasks, meticulously integrated materials to create highlights, selecting and organizing a wealth of footage featuring distinctive CDUT activities for submission, ultimately achieving successful inclusion in the event. This accolade follows the Sichuan Opera Art Digital Communication Museum's recognition in the Ministry of Education's Ideological and Political Quality Project, marking another key achievement for CDUT in its profound exploration of Xi Jinping's cultural ethos and its proactive approach to the modern transmission and dissemination of China's traditional cultural excellence.
