Prof. Xu Qiang Was Selected as One of the First Members of the Geological Society of  China

Recently, the Geological Society of China issued the Announcement on Publishing the First Members of Geological Society of China (DHZ [2022] No. 108) and the Announcement on Publishing the First Honorary Members of Geological Society of China (DHZ [2022] No. 108). Ten scientists, including Prof. Xu Qiang, Vice President of CDUT and Executive Deputy Director of the State Key Laboratory of Geohazard Prevention and Geoenvironment Protection, were elected as the first members of the Geological Society of China.

The Geological Society of China started the selection of the first batch of its members in April 2022 in accordance with the Regulations on the Member Work of the Geological Society of China (for Trial Implementation) and the Notice on Member Selection of the Geological Society of China. Ten scientists were identified as the members of the Geological Society of China after the selection by the Member Selection Committee and the deliberation and approval by the 41st Standing Council of the 40th Council of the Geological Society of China.

According to relevant regulations, academicians are not subject to selection conditions, procedures, and quota restrictions when they become honorary members. With the consent of academicians and the confirmation of the Member Selection Committee, 55 academicians, including Chen Yuchuan, have been identified as the honorary members of the Geological Society of China.

It is learned that the Geological Society of China has established a member system to improve the membership system of the Geological Society of China, and set up an academic and professional recognition system to vigorously promote the scientific spirit, encourage its members to constantly ascend the peak of science and technology, advance the progress of geological science and technology, and boost the development of China's geology undertakings.

[Profile]

Xu Qiang: Vice President of CDUT and Executive Deputy Director of the State Key Laboratory of Geohazard Prevention and Geoenvironment Protection. a winner of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, a member of the Cheung Kong Scholars Program, one of the National Outstanding Professional and Technical Talents, a recipient of the National May Labor Day Medal, a winner of the Li Siguang Geological Science Award, and a member of the 12th and the 13th CPPCC National Committees.

Prof. Xu Qiang has been engaged in research on the theory and technology of landslide prevention and control, especially in the aspects of landslide formation mechanism, early identification, monitoring, and early warning. He is a well-known expert in this area at home and abroad and has won two first prizes (ranking: the 2nd and 7th) and one second prize (ranking: the 1st) of the National Science and Technology Progress Award and nine first prizes of provincial, ministerial and national first-level societies, published 13 monographs (including 7 rated as No. 1 in relevant rankings) and more than 500 papers (including more than 250 selected in SCI), obtained more than 20 authorized invention patents and 10 registered software copyrights, and compiled three industry specifications and guidelines.

In 2021 and 2022, he was selected into Stanford  University's list of the World's Top 2% Scientists 2022, Elsvier's list of "Highly Cited Chinese Researchers", and the list of " Top 100,000 Scientists around the World" for two consecutive years. When WOS is used to retrieve the theme of landslides, Xu Qiang is one of the authors who published the largest number of papers on landslides in the world. Scorpus has been used to retrieve nearly 10,000 citations of his papers, with an H index of 50. Several of his papers have been selected as highly cited papers. His major scientific and technological achievements and contributions are as follows:

(1) He has made important theoretical innovations in hydrodynamics, sliding mechanism caused by strong earthquakes, and high-speed remote motion mechanism of landslides and broke through many traditional understandings, laying a theoretical foundation for scientific prevention and control of landslides.

(2) He has built a "three-inspection" system to solve the problem of "where are the hazard points" and put forward a theoretical method of "process warning" to solve the problem of "when the disaster will happen", which both make China a world pacemaker in the identification, monitoring, and early warning of landslide hazards.

(3) He has established a complete set of technical methods for landslide emergency disposal and comprehensive prevention and treatment and successfully implemented the emergency disposal and treatment for dozens of large landslides.
