College of Materials and Chemistry & Chemical Engineering
The College of Materials and Chemistry & Chemical Engineering originates from the former Department Two of Chengdu College of Geology and established the country's first undergraduate program of "Analysis of Mineral Rocks" in 1959. With more than sixty years of growth and expansion, the College has form the discipline cluster combining materials, chemistry, and chemical engineering, qualified to issue bachelor's, master's and doctor's degrees. It consists of the Teaching Division of Basic Chemistry, the Department of Applied Chemistry, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and the Department of Chemical Engineering, and has 2 laboratories and 1 center : the Basic Chemistry Laboratory, the General Laboratory of Materials and Chemistry & Chemical Engineering, and the Demonstration Center for Experimental Teaching on Basic Chemistry,
As a support unit for the building of "Geological Resources and Geological Engineering" into a first-class discipline of a world first-class university, the College has established the Sichuan Collaborative Innovation Center of Comprehensive Utilization of Strategic Mineral Resources in Panxi (Panzhihua-Xichang) Area, the Sichuan Key Laboratory of Mineral Resources Chemistry, the Key Laboratory of Selection and Smelting and Application of Tellurobismuthite in Panxi (Panzhihua-Xichang) Area of Sichuan Province, the State Key Laboratory of Collaborative Control of Water and Soil Pollution and Joint Restoration for Environmental Protection (co-construction), and the Key Laboratory of Comprehensive Utilization of Sulfate Saline Lake Resources (co-construction). Featuring two provincial key disciplines of "Applied Chemistry" and "Materials Science", it is qualified to confer doctor's degrees of 3 secondary disciplines of Mineral Materials Science, Mineral Resources Chemistry, and Metallic Minerals and Metallic Materials, master's degrees of 3 primary disciplines of Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Technology, and Chemistry, and professional master's degrees of Materials and Chemical Engineering. It offers 6 undergraduate programs including Applied Chemistry, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Technology, New Energy Materials and Devices( on Yibin Campus), Chemistry( enrollment discontinued in 2020), and Pharmaceutical Engineering (enrollment discontinued in 2020), of which Applied Chemistry, Materials Science and Engineering, and Chemical Engineering and Technology are state first-class undergraduate programs, and New Energy Materials and Devices is provincial first-class undergraduate program.
The College has specially invited 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering to join its faculty team, which is mainly composed of graduates from overseas institutions, young and mid-age doctors and teachers with academic achievements and of which 89.3% are professional teachers with a doctoral degree. The faculty has 15 doctoral supervisors( including 6 outside ones), 30 professors or equivalent, 32 associate professors or equivalent, 17 researchers, and 3 associate researchers. Among them, 2 are academic and technological leaders of Sichuan Province, 1 is recipient of the State Council Special Government Allowances, 2 are supported by the Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University, 2 are Outstanding experts of Sichuan Province, 6 are reserve candidates for the provincial academic and technological leaders, and 1 is a winner of Young Teacher Award of Fok Ying Tung Education Foundation.
With talent cultivation as its fundamental task and aspiration, the College has fostered a large number of qualified and high-skilled talents for the country, with 2143 undergraduates and postgraduates enrolled at present. As a result of having attached great importance to the implementation of education quality and education engineering programs and, it has been honored with 5 awards of provincial or above levels for educational achievements, has published nearly 40 textbooks and other teaching materials, and has been recognized as the provincial talent cultivation base for undergraduates specializing in materials supported by the Higher Education Reform Project for the New Century of Sichuan Province. "Materials Science and Engineering" and "Chemical Engineering and Technology" are selected for the state Excellent Engineers Education and Training Program and have passed the national engineering education accreditation; "Pharmaceutical Engineering" and "New Energy Materials and Devices" are included in the provincial Excellent Engineers Education and Training Program; "Materials Science and Engineering" and "Chemical Engineering and Technology" are also provincial characteristic specialties, and "Applied Chemistry" is the University-level characteristic specialty. The College delivers 2 provincial exquisite online courses in "Principles of Chemical Engineering" and "Environmental Analytical Chemistry", 3 provincial exquisite shared courses in Environmental Analytical Chemistry", "Principles of Chemical Engineering" and "Analysis of Complex Substances", and 3 provincial exquisite courses in "Principles of Chemical Engineering", "Analysis of Complex Substances", and "Basics of Modern Chemistry". Besides, the "3D Simulation Experiment of Lithium Extraction via Adsorption from Deep Underground Brine" is a provincial simulation experiment program. And Basics of Materials Engineering, Chemical Technology, Instrument Analysis, Physical Chemistry, Chemistry and Physics of High Polymers, Chemistry and Modern Material Civilization, Analytical Chemistry, Instrument Analysis, and Synthesis of Pharmaceuticals are the University-level exquisite online courses; Analytical Chemistry, Chemistry of Synthesized Pharmaceuticals, Physical Properties of Materials, Physical Chemistry of Materials, Environmental Analytical Chemistry(bilingual), General Chemistry, and Basics of Materials Science are University-level exquisite courses; Basics of Materials Science, Basics of Modern Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Physics and Chemistry of High Polymers are demonstration courses that the principle of "Ideological and Political Theories teaching in All Courses" informs.
With more than 60 years of development, the College has accumulated rich experience in and created fine conditions for education, where the Basic Chemistry Laboratory, the General Laboratory of Materials and Chemistry & Chemical Engineering, and the Sichuan Demonstration Center for Experimental Teaching on Basic Chemistry, and experimental teaching labs (including the General Laboratory Building) have been erected, covering a total floor area of about 9,000m2 and equipped with XRF, ICP-OES, LC-MS, GC-MS, FTIR, XRD, SEM and other large scientific testing and analysis instruments worth more than RMB30 million.
The College is a provincial important base for high-end talent cultivation and scientific research in the area of materials and chemistry, applying the basic theories of chemistry, chemical engineering, and materials to the efficient and high-quality utilization of natural resources and environmental governance and protection, which has become its feature and strength, reviving its disciplines and making it distinguished from other universities in the country. It has stood out as a beachhead in the fields of phase equilibrium and salt brine chemical engineering, mineral resources exploitation, mineral materials processing and utilization, new energy materials, complex component separation and concentration, trace and ultra-trace analysis, and high-sensitivity and high-resolution detection principles and methods from the rest of the country, and edged into the advanced ranks in the world in some of those fields. Furthermore, it holds a wealth of research achievements in the areas of plasma technology and new materials, active ingredient extraction of traditional Chinese medicines etc. In recent years, it has undertaken 19 state-level scientific research programs and more than 40 ministerial and provincial ones, with an aggregate research fund of about RMB31.04 million. The results include 7 prizes of ministerial and provincial science and technology achievement awards and 16 other honors and awards, 139 licensed national invention patents, industrial applications of 7 scientific and technological advances, and 523 academic papers published in SCI publications.
