Recently, the research team led by Professor Liu Qingyou, Secretary of the Party Committee of Chengdu University of Technology (CDUT), in collaboration with Southwest Petroleum University, Tarim Oilfield Company, and Chuanqing Drilling Engineering Company, has achieved a series of landmark results with independent intellectual property rights.
Strengthening the foundation of intelligent drilling research. The team is planning to establish China’s first intelligent drilling and completion experimental platform dedicated to deep unconventional oil and gas resources.Led by Liu Qingyou, the project “Development of an Intelligent Drilling and Completion Simulation System for Downhole Robots,” funded by a Major Scientific Research Instrumentation Programme of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), aims to build the country’s first experimental platform for intelligent drilling and completion targeting deep unconventional oil and gas.
Innovating engineering equipment development. The team has successfully developed China’s first downhole traction robot for horizontal wells. Under Liu’s leadership, the team undertook a key joint project funded by the NSFC and pioneered a new technology featuring “adaptive traction + targeted explosive - hydraulic composite fracturing.”

Setting new standards for high-level well control. The first fully electric equipment is leading the digital and intelligent transformation. Dedicated to the field of high-level well control equipment, the team has developed China’s first domestically produced fully electric choke manifold and intelligent control system with independent intellectual property rights.

Innovative technical approaches to enhance fracturing operations. To address key technical challenges in the fracturing process, Liu’s team has established a wireless wellhead diagnostic and fracture monitoring system based on “water-hammer signals and high-frequency tube waves,” significantly improving the quality and efficiency of fracturing operations.

Looking ahead, Chengdu University of Technology will continue to leverage its integrated strengths in geology and engineering to contribute expertise and innovation to safeguarding China’s national energy security.
